The Department of Animal Science, Aarhus University, invites highly qualified
applicants to apply for a professorship in the area of management of animal welfare related production diseases in livestock herds.

The position is available from 1 September 2021 or soon thereafter.

The professor’s main activity will be to conduct and develop research, as well as research-based supervision/teaching and to contribute as an expert consultant to the Danish authorities. Internationally excellent applicants have the opportunity to achieve a competitive starting grant to boost the building of their research team.

The main focus in the position is on:
  • Development of methods for herd health and welfare management with special focus on animal-welfare-related production diseases in livestock production systems.
  • Development of methods to prevent and handle welfare-related production diseases in livestock production with special emphasis on dairy cattle herds. 
  • Identification of causes of production diseases and their effects on animal welfare.
  • Development of welfare indicators based on clinical measures and registration of data regarding production diseases for assessing animal welfare in livestock herds.
The professor will have to rise external funding, participate in providing research-based consultancy to authorities,  participate in knowledge exchange with society and industry, be responsible for teaching and supervising students at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels as well as young researchers and technical staff.


Qualifications for a full professor level at Aarhus University include, for example, a very
strong academic background, documented successful grant writing and experience
with project management, industrial/public sector collaboration as well as teaching and

Department of Animal Science (ANIS)

The mission of ANIS is to perform basic, strategic and applied research and innovation
within the department’s core activities: nutrition, health and welfare. The research activities make up the science-based foundation of ANIS’ teaching, public sector consultancy and
collaboration with business and industry. The successful applicant will be placed in the research unit Welfare.

Place of work and area of employment

The place of work is Blichers Allé 20, DK-8830 Tjele, and the area of employment is
Aarhus University with related departments. Teaching activities are primarily conducted
at AU Campus, 8000 Aarhus.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
