4. Basic nutrition and physiology

Our research aim and focus

The aim is to generate basic knowledge on the molecular aspects of nutritive (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins) and bioactive components with focus on how it can influence gut and systemic health.

Our primary focus areas

  • Basic work with the molecular and physiological aspects of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins and bioactive components.
  • Development of molecular and omics techniques for analysing metabolites in biological fluids.
  • Molecular aspects of digestion and fermentation of nutritive and bioactive compounds for understanding how it affects gut and systemic health within and across primarily monogastric species.
  • Identification of suitable bio- and selection markers in biological fluids, cells and gaseous exhalation with focus on physiological responses to nutrient interventions.
  • Development of animal models as well as relevant analytical techniques for nutritional and physiological studies.
  • Development of biorefining techniques for production of nutritional high-value products and test thereof in suitable in vitro and in vivo systems.

Our research perspectives

The overall vision is to contribute with basic nutritional and physiological knowledge for a nutrient efficient, climate and environmental friendly production of healthy food animals.

It is also to generate basic knowledge on the mode of action of nutritive and bioactive components for gut and systemic health of monogastric species including humans.
