  1. Winter Feeding of Organic Sows - WIFI

    Organic pig farming continues to face challenges to its environmental
    and economic competitiveness. Low feed efficiency combined with
    relience on concentrate feed and non-local protein sources increase
    nutrient losses and climatic footprint, put pressure on land resources
    and compromise farm economic resilience.

    WI-FI addresses these challenges by focusing on sow nutrition to
    develop winter feeding strategies. The project provides new scientific
    knowledge on 1) Energy and protein requirements of outdoor sows fed
    two levels of dietary protein 2) Intake and utilisations of two roughage
    types and how these interact with sow body condition, reproduction and
    litter performance.Description


  2. Feed the pigs and train the enzymes prior to weaning

    The purpose of FORFRA is to develop a new feeding concept for piglets that ensures weaning with optimal growth without development of diarrhea and without use of zinc oxide at medical levels and antibiotics. The feed will consist of optimized heat treated cereals, processed soy protein, and milk protein. The degradation profile of the cereal products and soybean meal will be determined in vitro and products with fast liberation of nutrients will be selected for the diets. These products are advantageous in piglets where high passage rate in the small intestine combined with low secretion of digestive enzymes limit digestion and absorption. This will furthermore allow for optimal protein supply that supports maximal growth. The diets will be fed to piglets from two days of age, which is hypothesized to stimulate the development and secretion of digestive enzymes. Feeding the same diets until two weeks post-weaning ensures that a high feed intake is maintained. Overall, the optimized diet and feeding concept in combination will translate into high digestibility of nutrients that will result in optimal growth and prevent development of post weaning diarrhea.

  4. CleanMeat and CleanMilk – fremtidens bæredygtige fødevareproduktion

    Projektet er rettet mod at udvikle metoder og know-how inden for produktion af kunstig kød og mælk. Projektet vil etablere og teste cellekulturer til produktion af kød og mælk og derudover udvikle livscyklusmodeller til vurdering af produkternes effekt på klima og miljø. I projektet oprenses muskelceller og yverceller fra slagtedyr fra den eksisterende mælkeproduktion, og bæredygtige proteinkilder til vækst af cellerne bliver undersøgt som alternativ til animalsk serum. Endelig bliver kvaliteten og funktionaliteten af de cellulært producerede kød- og mælkelignende produkter undersøgt i relation til deres anvendelse som fødevarer. Projektet skal være med til at styrke Danmarks position inden for dette forskningsområde.Description


  5. CleanMeat and CleanMilk – future sustainable food production

    Danish food production amounts for approximately 21% of the total Danish greenhouse gas emission (GHG), and especially animal-based food production draws heavily on land and water resources. Thus, any strategy to decrease these numbers are highly relevant to pursue to fulfill the Danish climate targets in 2030 (39 % reduction in GHG) and further in 2050 (carbon neutrality). In vitro (IV) culture of animal-based cells to deliver meat and milk-like products could be one sustainable solution to support these climate targets, while still delivering highly nutritional and appreciated products. In 2013, the first non-commercial burger was produced from cultured bovine muscle cells, but still no commercial products are available, because there are several challenges to overcome.
    The project CleanPro aims at establishing robust model systems to test IV meat and milk production, and to generate the necessary know-how on IV food production, which will contribute to Denmark’s future positioning in this field. In four research work packages we will 1) establish robust bovine mammary and muscle cell cultures with the capacity to grow, while still maintaining the characteristics to produce milk and meat, 2) test alternatives to calf serum as growth media aiming at serum-reduced production, 3) characterize the functionality of the produced products and finally 4) develop Life Cycle Assessment models of the IV produced CleanMeat and CleanMilk produced under the developed production systems.

  8. Efficient restoring of body fat in using fibre in gestation diet

  11. Glyphosate treatment of crops: a sustainable strategy?

    The aim of the project is to examine potential effects when farm animals are exposed to glyphosate residues via the feed. The project examines the effect of glyphosate on the gastrointestinal microorganisms and on the mineral status in pigs and poultry as well as possible secondary effects on the animals’ health and productivity. The studies will be conducted both at the research facilities at Aarhus University Foulum as well as in a number of commercial herds. The studies will be carried out with newly weaned piglets and laying hens.


  12. Biobanking as a conservation tool

  13. Grass milk

    The overall idea behind this project is to promote a balanced development of the entire organic sector by increasing the milk producers contribution of nutrients supply to the organic crop production and the remaining livestock productions. For this reason, it is important to have a high proportion of clover in the cows’ feed ration and the herd´s crop rotation.
    The grass field has potential to supply the dairy cow with energy and nutrients that, without or with a very limited supplements, can ensure an efficient and profitable milk production. This is already put into practice in countries such as Ireland and New Zealand, however in Demark, this is only examined sparsely. Therefore, there is a need to look at how grass, fresh as well as preserved, can be included in the feeding of cows throughout the year in significant amounts. Such pasture-based ration can ensure a high resource utilization in cattle herds along with a beneficial and provable influence on the milk properties, which can result in a large-scale value increment for the benefit of the entire feed to food chain.
    The aim of this project is to develop and document the production of milk, based on rations with a high proportion of clover, partly as a differentiated milk product and partly as an ecological system that contributes to the supply of feed and nutritional components to the remaining organic sectors.

  14. Value adder through ressource efficient organic pig production

    The overall aims of the EFFORT project are to establish basic knowledge on nutrient
    requirements of organic produced pigs, transfer the knowledge into new feed
    formulations and feeding strategies and implement these strategies at practical
    Organic pigs use energy for physical activity and thermoregulation and ingest
    substantial amounts of grass and roughage, but these aspects are not taken into
    account in feed planning. In practice, the nutrient supply is imbalanced which
    negatively affects feed efficiency and environmental load of the production.
    In the project we develop a method to quantify grass intake for growing-finishing
    pigs and outdoor sows with access to pasture based on biomarkers in blood and
    urine. Then we quantify nutrient intake and nutrient requirements for physical
    activity, thermoregulation, and maintenance in growing-finishing pigs and outdoor
    pregnant sows under influence of season based on live weight measurements,
    blood samples and back fat scanning. Body pools of water, protein and fat are
    determined by deuterium oxide in sows evaluate build-up/mobilization of body
    depots. Similarly, nutrient requirements for physical activity, thermoregulation,
    milk production for outdoor lactating sows under influence of lactation length and
    season are quantified.
    Based on this knowledge feeding strategies will be developed representing the best
    compromise for sows at different stages and season and tested under commercial
    conditions. Likewise, feeding strategies for finishing pigs will be developed and
    tested under commercial conditions including strategies based on the concept of
    compensatory growth. Finally, the overall effect of implementing improved feeding
    strategies on production costs and environmental impact at herd level will be

    This project involves in vitro techniques simulating the digestive processes in the gastrointestinal tract of pigs in order to understand the actions of various arabinoxylan-degrading enzymes under conditions resembling that of the gastro-intestinal tract. The project will comprise a thorough investigation regarding the action of xylanases and arabinofuranosidases acting alone or in combinations on whole-grain cereal and fractions as well as complex feedstuffs used in feeding of monogastric animals.Description

  17. Feed-a-Gene: Adapting the feed, the animal and the feeding techniques to improve the efficiency and sustainability of monogastric livestock production systems

    Feed-a-Gene aims to better adapt different components of monogastric livestock production systems (i.e., pigs, poultry and

    alternative feed resources and feed technologies, the identification and selection of robust animals that are better adapted to
    fluctuating conditions, and the development of feeding techniques that allow optimizing the potential of the feed and the
    To reach this overall objective, the project will:
    - Develop new and alternative feeds and feed technologies to make better use of local feed resources, green biomass and
    by-products of the food and biofuel industry.
    - Develop methods for the real-time characterization of the nutritional value of feeds to better use and adapt diets to animal
    - Develop new traits of feed efficiency and robustness allowing identification of individual variability to select animals that are
    more adapted to changes in feed and environmental conditions.
    - Develop biological models of livestock functioning to better understand and predict nutrient and energy utilization of
    animals along their productive trajectory.
    - Develop new management systems for precision feeding and precision farming combining data and knowledge from the
    feed, the animal, and the environment using innovative monitoring systems, feeders, and decision support tools.
    - Evaluate the overall sustainability of new management systems developed by the project.
    - Demonstrate the innovative technologies developed by the project in collaboration with partners from the feed industry,
    breeding companies, equipment manufacturers, and farmers’ organisations to promote the practical implementation of

  18. Impact of shelter enrichment of metabolic cages in studies of protein metabolism

    Metabolic cage housing of laboratory animals is necessary within a wide range of nutritional, metabolic, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies in both basic and applied nutritional and biomedical research. It allows accurate measures of food and water intake and urinary and faecal output, but restrained living space, use of grid flooring, absence of bedding substrate and enrichment, and social isolation impose negative behavioral and physiological responses. Earlier studies confirm that rats prefer a cage with a shelter, but such enrichment is challenging due to the risk of interference with quantitative collection of faeces and urine. In nitrogen metabolism studies, there is an increased risk of N-loss via ammonia emission if urea in the collected urine is not trapped and acidified. In this project, we will investigate if metabolism cages enriched with shelters can improve the animal welfare and employed without interference with the quality of the quantitative data. Such data are important in order to implement improvement in nutritional and biomedical studies involving housing of experimental animals in metabolic cages.

  21. GreenPork – Organic Pork produced with grass protein

    Green-Pork will describe the meat and eating quality of pork from slaughter pigs fed with increasing amounts of grass-based protein (0, 5, 10 and 15%) in order to demonstrate how such a protein source can be fed to organic slaughter pigs with optimal meat and eating quality.
    From a dose response experiment with grass-based protein to slaughter pigs we sample meat from 48 pigs allocated to 4 different treatments (0, 5, 10 and 15 % protein) from weaning to slaughter at 110 kg. 24 h post mortem the loin and ham are sampled and will be analysed for pH, colour, oxidation texture, fatty acid profile and eating quality.

    Projektet foregår i samarbejde med Aarhus Universitetshospital, Rigshospitalet, University of California – Davis, Norwegian University of Life Science, Arla Food Ingredients, Lantmännen og DuPont. Et af målene er at udvikle sunde fødevarer, der kan modvirke udviklingen af fedmerelaterede problemer i mennesker.
    Undersøgelserne vil dels blive foretaget hos mennesker, der er sunde, diabetiske eller har metabolisk syndrom, og dels med grise, der har metaboliske abnormaliteter. En del af projektet er rettet mod at udvikle en grisemodel, der har metaboliske abnormaliteter, der svarer til det, man ser hos mennesker med metabolisk syndrom.
    Vi vil udvikle en grisemodel, der gør det muligt at bruge invasive metoder til at undersøge konsekvenserne af fedme på molekylært niveau. Det er undersøgelser, man ikke kan udføre på mennesker. Derimod kan resultaterne overføres til mennesker, fordi fysiologien hos grise og mennesker ligner hinanden meget.Description


  30. Metabolic changes by carbohydrate and protein quality in the development and mitigation of metabolic syndrome

    There is an alarming rise in the frequency of metabolic syndrome (MeS), which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) two-fold and type 2 diabetes (T2D) five-fold. Easy access to energy dense, unhealthy foods is a key factor responsible for this development. In this project we will study dietary strategies based on high protein and dietary fibre (DF) to mitigate MeS and the risk for CVD in human subjects fulfilling the criteria for MeS.

    porcine model, which allow more invasive exploration than in humans. In this model we will study the molecular consequences in adipose tissue and biofluids of development of obesity.Description


  31. Delivery of intestinal satiety inducing ingredients

    Obesity and the related medical conditions are a global challenge which is affecting an increasing number of the population worldwide. However, current approaches such as education, encouragement for more physical activities, and availability of low fat and low calorie food have not yielded the anticipated positive effects on weight management. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel strategies for reducing food intake without influencing the pleasure of food, by taking recently gained knowledge from molecular biology, material and food science into consideration. The overall goal is the identification and controlled delivery of active ingredients designed to affect the regulating satiety mechanisms in the gastrointestinal tract, which can be part of everyday foods. Satiety enhancing products aim at reducing the food intake by strengthening the internal physiological signals. This project is a collaborative effort between DuPont, the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center and the Department of Animal Science at Aarhus University, aiming at supporting national and international strategies to address the preventable disease obesity. The successful interplay of the three main research challenges include; 1) identification of novel satiety enhancing ingredients, 2) development of encapsulation strategies for protection, masking and site specific delivery, and 3) combination with food formulations. Taken together, this project is anticipated to yield knowledge and technologies with significant commercial and social impact. The beneficial outcomes of this project will not only contribute to the accessibility of healthier food, but will also strengthen Denmark’s world leading position in the food science and production, thereby having an impact on growth and employment.Description

    The project aims at creating a new business area for Danish dairy industry and producers of plant proteins through understanding of how to produce healthy and affordable, blended dairy products for the growing African middle-class based on mixtures of isolated proteins from plants (rapeseed is used as a model) and milk. Development of a healthy and affordable milk based product will secure a successful entry to the African market and have large business potential at the global market. Novel water-based methods for isolation of rapeseed protein fractions with desired functionality will be developed. A molecular understanding of how rapeseed proteins interact with milk proteins will be achieved enabling creation of new food products of high nutritive value. The nutritional quality of these new products will be evaluated in studies on ileum fistulated pigs. Protein quality determined by the new, FAO-recommended method DIAAS will be compared with growth of piglets and expression of growth markers to identify the protein fractions and protein blends that optimize growth. Mechanistic studies on how proteins or peptides released during digestion affect the release of growth factors will be performed, and short-term and long term human intervention studies will be conducted to show the effect of the developed blended dairy products on the expression on growth factors and growth. The products are particularly useful for populations suffering from moderate malnutrition during early stages of life, and West Africa is targeted as a market because of the high economic growth in that region. The project includes studies of consumer and food preferences in West Africa, and investigates how consumer behavior can be directed towards a healthier diet and which product types will have the highest appeal to the consumers.Description

    Projekts hovedformål er at reducere foderforbruget hos danske søer uden at deres holdbarhed eller reproduktionsegenskaber påvirkes negativt. Målet med projektet er at ”designe” en polt, der kræver mindre vedligeholdelsesfoder
    og som holder længere som so. Dette kan antageligt opnås, hvis poltene bliver cirka 10 procent mindre end i dag ved første løbning og denne mindre kropsstørrelse opretholdes, når dyret bliver til en so uden at det går ud
    over deres produktivitet. Via ændret fodring i vægtintervallet 50 – 120 kg forventes det, at poltenes kropssammensætning kan manipuleres,
    således at poltene kan løbes ved en lavere vægt end i dag. Fodringen ændres ved relativt at øge mængden af energi i foderblandingen samtidig med at indholdet af protein og aminosyrer reduceres. Dette gøres for at favorisere
    aflejringen af fedt frem for protein, således at poltene bliver kønsmodne ved en lavere vægt, men med samme rygspæktykkelse som i dag. Såfremt poltene kan løbes ved en vægt der er 12-13 kg lavere end i dag, og denne lavere vægt kan opretholdes gennem hele soens levetid, bør foderforbruget per årsso kunne reduceres med cirka 85 FEso svarende til sparede foderomkostninger for de danske svineproducenter på cirka 170 millioner kroner årligt. Det her beskrevne projekt udgør de indledende og grundlæggende undersøgelser, hvis resultater er en forudsætning for Videncenter for Svineproduktions projekt ”PIFT – polte i form til faring” under programmet ”Soen i form til faring” kan gennemføres.

  41. New approach for evaluating pesticide toxicity on fertility

    Over the last decades human male fertility and semen quality has decreased. The causal factors are not yet identified, but one focus is on the widespread use of compounds with reprotoxic properties such as pesticides. Before new compounds are released, they undergo risk assessment that includes effects on reproduction in animals and litter size in rats after natural mating as a significant element
    in this assessment.
    The project will provide fundamental knowledge on in vivo and in vitro
    fertilization and on sperm gene function that can improve prediction of reprotoxic effects of pesticides and other reprotoxic compounds.Description
