Can you produce milk without a cow – or meat without animals? Researchers from Aarhus University will investigate this in a new research project that will pave the way for a more sustainable food production.

A feeding trial at AU Foulum has shown that cows’ enteric methane emission decreases markedly when the amount of roughage in the feed ration is limited significantly. However, this feeding strategy is not applicable in practice, as it challenges the cows’ health as well as the farmer’s economy.

Experiments carried out at Aarhus University in Foulum demonstrate that green protein extracted from clover grass is a very useful diet for pigs. This applies to both pig welfare, growth, feed utilization as well as meat quality and taste.

Aarhus University leads a new research project which is to pave the way for a more climate-efficient dairy production. The aim of the project is to reduce the cow’s methane emission via feeding and to investigate the biological reasons for why cows differ in methane production. Furthermore, researchers will examine how we can implement the new climate initiatives in the best way and hence document the effect in the future.
