Fernanda Tahamtani from Department of Animal Science received a grant from CostAction GroupHouseNet to work on a study on feather picking

The grant allowed Fernanda to go on a Short Term Scientific Mission to Bratislava to the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Slovakia from February to March.

Fernanda collaborated with colleagues at the Slovak Academy of Sciences on a study on feather picking.

Fernanda worked with the group under Dr Lubor Kostal, who has developed a custom-built Skinner box for training and testing laying hens. Fernanda trained the hens to peck at an image displayed in a touchscreen in exchange for a food reward.

The result from this study will aid researchers in the investigation of how chicken perceive small differences between conspecifics and how they select their victims of feather picking.
